Maternity Photo Shoot : La Jolla, California

Not only have I been dreaming about this day forever, I am so blown away with the dreamy images Taplin Photo captured of my husband, baby bump, and I on the beaches of La Jolla, CA. A little mermaid is on her way, and my love for mermaids and the ocean inspired this Maternity Photo Shoot. We are so blessed to live in such a magical place, and I cannot wait to share my love for the beach and marine life with our daughter!

These memorable images of a special time in our lives will be cherished for years to come, and I highly recommend Taplin Photo to capture your memories as well! Not only did Emily Taplin graduate from the same school as my talented sister Molly Dillon Photography, she is so much fun to do a photo shoot with! Emily Taplin puts you at ease, and she will capture all the laughs and smiles along the way.

Surprise Your Partner :: DIY Pregnancy Announcement

When you and your partner decide to start a family, you both are excited, nervous, and even scared of the unknown. The one thing you do know is that your love is so great that you want to share it with a child of your own. This special time in your life is like nothing you’ve experienced before, just like being in love for the first time.

Share those butterflies with your partner by surprising him or her with the same excitement you felt when you saw that positive pregnancy test. If you are a horrible secret keeper, this may not be the approach for you, but I only had to wait a few hours! This Pregnancy Announcement is something you prep before you know you are pregnant, but for heaven’s sake do not torture yourself by waiting too long to tell your partner. I did have a silent scream in the mirror when I found out, and did a little dance in the bathroom…had to be discreet with my husband in the next room.

This DIY project is something that you and your partner will remember forever, so choose items that mean something. My husband and I met in Franklin, TN., 20 twenty minutes South of Nashville. We now live back in my hometown San Diego, so I wanted to mesh places that mean something to us.

My husband is Johnny Cash’s biggest fan, and has always said, “when we have a baby, he or she will wear a Johnny Cash onesie”. Hello Amazon, and a week later this adorable “Crawl the Line” onesie arrives. Now to mesh San Diego with Nashville. Home Goods is a Designer’s Secret BFF. I discovered this sea themed Secret Book Box, and it would fit the onesie perfectly. Then all you need is to write a little note announcing you are pregnant, wrap it up pretty, and voila!

I took my husband to our spot in La Jolla where we carved our initials when we first moved here together. I then “took his picture” on my phone, while video taping the entire reaction. Cost of these items for the DIY Pregnancy Announcement: $25.00. My husband’s reaction when he found out I am pregnant: Priceless.

How To Choose The One :: Your Wedding Gown

Selecting your wedding gown for the BIG day, is very much like choosing your partner for life. You have to make sure you are compatible, make sure it’s the right fit; and many people ask, how do you know when it is time to say YES to the DRESS? One word: butterflies.

Getting to butterflies can be quite the challenge, and in many cases, several locations and dress options. First, you need to establish a Budget for your wedding gown. Most bridal gowns today tend to run from $800-3000 for most designers readily available in bridal boutiques in the US, and on average, most brides spend around $1250 for their gown. One way to cut down on cost is to search for pre-owned bridal gowns, or keep a look out for bridal shops in your area for Sample Sales.

Once you have established your budget, and before you even venture to a Sample Sale, you need to determine the style of gown you want. This is where compatibility and fit are most important. The best advice I was given, and that I will share with you is simply this: try on each style of gown (whether you love lace or not) to determine if you like mermaid, trumpet, fit & flare, a-line, or full ball gown. The first time I tried on wedding gowns, my heart was set on a form fitting mermaid gown. Then I tried one on, the exact one I had drooled over in magazine, and while I felt fabulous, I did not get butterflies. I was underwhlemed. It felt like a dress I would wear to a red carpet event, not down the church aisle to surprise the love of my life.

The most important fact about trying on all different styles is you can cut out a style that simply will not work, and determine which style makes you feel like a bride. You have selected a style, now it is about the little details. Bling, ruffles, texture, color and fabric are next.

Search online and in bridal magazines for the details on gowns, even if it is not the style you want. Make an appointment at your local bridal shop, and bring these aides to show your bridal consultant at your appointment. She will pull options for you, and then all 3 factors come into play. Compatibility, fit, and then this is where the butterflies come in.

You may get lucky with a Mother Fairy Consultant, and in my case, it happened to be a designer that I was obsessing over, Justin Alexander. He happened to have a trunk show at the bridal shop where I had my appointment. My consultant and Justin Alexander came up to me, and he said, “this is your gown”, and politely took the other ball gown out of my hands, and handed me her. The moment I stepped in front of the mirror with her on, I melted. I mean, butterflies to the point I was bursting out in hives and tears! This gown had all 3 factors, complete with tufts of tulle over ostrich feathers and a French corset. She was perfect. While the girls were “jacking me up” with accessories and veils, Justin Alexander personally drew a sketch of me in my gown (gasp!). I snapped a photo with him, and said YES to the DRESS!

Much like choosing your mate for life, you just know when it’s right, and you say yes.

Wedding Photos with Your Furry Friend

I am absolutely in love with these photos by Molly Davidson Photography taken with our furry friend, Saylor the Newfoundland. If you cannot have your pet included in your wedding, forget a Trash the Dress session, and opt for a family portrait!

Taken on the cliffs of our hometown in La Jolla, CA., the ocean and our beloved Saylor are parts of our lives that are special to us as a married couple. On our wedding day, my bridal look was much more formal with my hair up, and my husband wore a tuxedo. I chose to go for a more relaxed beach inspired look with loose curls and fewer accessories for myself, while my husband kept a casual yet classic look for this shoot. You can change up your look for an after wedding shoot, and be sure to incorporate your extended furry family. You will be glad you were able to document this new chapter in your life.

Oliver Wedding Video

Heart beats fast, palms are sweaty, and tears well up in your eyes. These are all the smiling emotions that make for a great wedding video. Cleverly edited to music we selected, Love Like a Movie captured all the high points of our special day. I am so happy we were able to work with Robert Chapman whom partners with our Photographer, Teale Photography.

Your wedding video is meant for you and your husband to help you remember and relive the events of that memorable day. Love Like a Movie created a beautiful montage that we can cherish forever, and share with family and friends. We are so thankful to have this living memory that we can look back on years later. I highly recommend you opt for a Videographer to capture your big day. Your wedding day will be one you will never forget, but it will also whiz by like a freight train! Having all the precious moments captured on film is priceless.

Oliver Wedding

When every girl dreams of her wedding day, she imagines a magical experience complete with the perfect groom and the perfect day.  While planning a wedding can be stressful, our wedding day was nothing short of perfect.  It was better than I could have imagined, simply because I was marrying a beautiful man that I gave my heart to.  On that day I felt pure bliss.

I planned the entire Wedding, down to the mints and the peonies in my bouquet.  With the help of family and friends on that day and the days leading up to our wedding, my dream became reality.  A HUGE Thank You to all of these special people we love!!!

On 08.03.13 we held the Big Reveal at La Valencia Hotel in front of their romantic picture window, and proceeded to take bridal party photos on the hotel’s grounds.  We were wed at Mary Star of the Sea in La Jolla, CA., and the Reception followed the Ceremony at The Powerhouse in Del Mar, CA. The Reception site overlooked the Pacific Ocean, and we were lucky enough to have a picture perfect day.
